New research indicates that patients who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional lifestyle plans.
Research printed in a prominent medical journal points out that while overweight individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Individuals buying such treatments must be informed of the risk of quick weight regain when the treatment is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain suggests a return to pre-treatment mass in about 18 months.
Weighing Approaches
The research, which examined dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
The team emphasize that individuals who lose weight through dieting usually see a slower weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Understanding the Quick Regain
Experts suggest the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the accelerated regain.
The injections copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Chronic Disease?
Health authorities advise the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians argue that, considering the high risk of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "highlight the long-term character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.
User Experiences
Users who have discontinued the medication report a powerful resurgence of hunger.
"It was like something flipping and you're instantly starving," said one woman.
This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not established lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Growing Adoption
Survey data indicate that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.
- Use is higher among females compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, researchers stress that while these medications are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and maintained weight loss relies on integrated behavioural management.
