The governing board of the renowned performing arts venue has approved a measure to change its name the Trump-Kennedy Center, according to a statement from the White House.
Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt declared online that the board's decision was unanimous, citing "the extraordinary job President Trump has done over the last year in rescuing the building."
"This is destined to be a truly great team long into the future! The building will no doubt attain new levels of prestige and accomplishment," Leavitt added.
The intended name change is expected to be extremely contentious, notably in Washington, D.C., where the center has served as an architectural and cultural icon since its completion and dedication for President John F. Kennedy.
Recent History of the Institution
Shortly after beginning his term, President Donald Trump replaced all the center's existing board members and appointed supporters in their stead. The reconstituted board subsequently voted to appoint Trump as chairman.
The president later secured approximately $257 million in federal funds to pay for significant upgrades and other financial needs at the national venue.

The vision for a Washington-based performing arts center began in the 1950s. Following the murder of President John F. Kennedy, the 35th president, in 1963, the planned venue was named in his honor.
